Construction company Kier, has been appointed by CityFibre, the UK’s third national digital infrastructure platform, to deliver full fibre rollouts across five towns and cities in central and south-west England.

The combined worth of the five contracts, covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare and Worcester, is up to £82 million and works will start from early 2021 and will run for two and a half years.

To support this programme of works, Kier says it will create 300 employment, apprenticeship and training opportunities across all of these locations, as well as upskilling teams to deliver this vital digital infrastructure.

This work is part of CityFibre’s £4 billion Gigabit City Investment Programme which is targeting up to eight million premises to upgrade to full fibre, and supports the Government’s full fibre ambitions to deliver super-fast broadband speeds across the country by 2025.

Barry McNicholas, group managing director at Kier Utilities & Rail, said: “The need for reliable and fast broadband speeds has never been greater and our expertise and skills within the telecoms sector means we are ideally placed to support CityFibre’s ambitious plans which will allow more consumers to benefit from a full fibre experience.”
