Black Ox Media & Events, publishers of The Business Magazine, have appointed the former Head of Digital of The Scotsman to lead their content operation.

The appointment of Stephen Emerson, who will take up the new role in January, is part of a drive by the Guildford-based firm to grow The Business Magazine and deepen the relationship with its audience and partners, as well as building new initiatives such as the Black Ox Labs creative content studio.

Black Ox Labs works with clients across the South East of England to create content that reaches a targeted audience through innovative storytelling techniques.

The former Head of Digital at The Scotsman will also focus on building traffic to The Business Magazine website and supporting Black Ox's growing events division.

Emerson, 40, was in charge of The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News websites for seven years and oversaw a team which grew the Edinburgh publisher's online audience from 1.6m unique users to over 8m.

For the past three years he has developed commercial partnerships with multiple corporate and government clients built around key growth areas of the Scottish economy including data, fintech, life sciences and sustainability.

Stephen Emerson said: "I am delighted to be joining Black Ox Media & Events and The Business Magazine.

I think there is a gap in the market for a modern and dynamic business news website that has aspiration at its core and seeks to provide useful and inspiring content to people who are looking to make their mark on the economy of the South East of England.

The site will focus on key growth areas of the South East economy and, along with accompanying print and online solutions, be able to provide clients with measured, targeted and effective content campaigns.”

Richard Thompson, Managing Director, Black Ox and The Business Magazine commented:

“We are very excited to welcome Stephen to the group, his editorial expertise combines perfectly with his ability to work with our clients and advertisers to bring their stories to life. We have ambitious plans for our future, with new products and initiatives in the pipeline for 2022, where Stephen and his editorial team will be key assets and integral to our business growth strategies.”

Black Ox Media & Events is a subsidiary of Branscombe Group, a private family-owned company, which unites forward-thinking media businesses and supports their growth ambitions.
