A University Training College that only opened two years ago has been awarded CyberFirst Silver Schools Status by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – a part of GCHQ – as part of a new initiative which recognises excellence in cyber security education.

The CyberFirst Schools programme recognises schools and colleges that share the NCSC’s passion to address the cyber skills gap and inspire young people from all backgrounds to pursue a career in the field. The UTC is one of only 10 schools nationally to receive this award.

SGS Berkeley Green UTC provides specialist vocational and academic education for learners aged 14-19 with a strong interest in cyber security, digital technologies and engineering. Their security operations centre (SOC) classroom enables students to access an isolated cyber lab network to develop their skills and knowledge ready for the working world.

Rich Williams, Assistant Headteacher and Specialism Lead for Cyber and Digital, said: “The UTC exists to prepare students for a career in cyber security, so we are delighted to be one of the first schools in the United Kingdom to receive the CyberFirst award. Students and staff are passionate about what we do and the award deservedly recognises their efforts.

“Cyber security is a rapidly expanding sector and, as a result of our partnership with the NCSC and Cyber Schools Hub Project, our students have been afforded unrivalled opportunities to learn about the varied cyber careers and network with industry colleagues. We are thankful to our employer partners who have supported students by delivering talks, offering work experience, and running activities. They connect our students to the working world of cyber and inspire them in the process. In some cases, this has even resulted in a job offer”
