A former boarding school in Worcestershire featuring an imposing main building seen in film is now on the market.

The former St Michael’s College near Tenbury Wells is being sold by Fisher German and is set within 22.76 acres of land with the freehold of the entire site up for sale.

Its striking main building, which is Grade II* listed, was used as a location for the 1986 TV film The Worst Witch, based on the Jill Murphy novel and starring screen legends Diana Rigg and Tim Curry.

The site also features 72,172 sq ft of floor space, including the college building and 13 other buildings of various sizes and ages, including the former sports hall, boarding houses, and educational blocks.

Malvern Hills District Council has expressed a desire to find a suitable use for the site and its buildings.

There is scope for the site to be used for education, training, residential development, hospitality, or healthcare.

Tom Pike, Partner at Fisher German, which is marketing the property, said: “The sale of St Michael’s College is a unique opportunity in Worcestershire for a wide variety of potential buyers.

“The land and the existing buildings represent a great opportunity for an imaginative buyer to work their magic and has the in-principle support of the local authority.

“The existing red-brick boarding houses could support a variety of uses, while the main college building could also be the centrepiece for an ambitious business looking to create a real destination in the Worcestershire countryside.

“There are genuinely so many different possibilities, which is why we have opened up the sale on an ‘all enquiries’ basis.”

St Michael’s College originally started life in the 19th century as a choir school for boys after being founded by English composer Sir Frederick Ouseley.

In 1985, the school was closed due to financial difficulties, before it reopened in 1990 as an independent international boarding school.

However, the pandemic forced it to close for a second time in June 2020 due to its international students being unable to travel, and the site has not been used since.
