What makes a commercial building cool? Roberts Limbrick take a look
In a world where remote working has become increasingly common, one way to tempt users away from their home offices is to create an inspiring workspace.
Whether it’s an office, research centre, or study space, Wayne Organ, Director at Roberts Limbrick looks at what makes a building cool...
The perfect site
The right setting can attract talent, inspire users, and turn your business into a destination. Cities and business parks are common choices, but a rural setting could be best.
Take our work at Hartpury. Students and staff are passionate about agricultural technology, so countryside surroundings provide the required facilities and inspiration. In contrast is Cheltenham’s Formal House, a former warehouse that combines historic and modern features to make a creative office space.
Advanced technology
A commercial building is definitely cool if it provides all the tools for someone to successfully do their job, but also allows for learning and cutting-edge research.
This was particularly important when we worked with Renishaw to design their innovation centre in Wotton-under-Edge. The building provides space for research and development, laboratories, machinery, and climatic controlled testing facilities – all with sweeping Cotswolds views.
Sustainability and wellbeing
Staff or students want to feel cared for, but also that the environment is being cared for, too. Creating a comfortable, energy-efficient space should be a priority for any project.
At Hatherley Place offices, we’ve worked with Robert Hitchins to aim for WiredScore Gold standard. This has involved a range of initiatives, including creating flexible working spaces, maximising natural light, providing bike storage with showers and changing rooms, and installing electric vehicle charging points.
