Cavan Bakery, which has shops across Surrey and a café at Molesey Boat Club, is tripling its footprint in a £1.5m expansion funded by Lloyds Bank.

The expansion sees the independent, family-owned business move into a new 15,000 square foot bakery in Walton-on-Thames, from which it can increase capacity and boost production.

Investment in new machinery at the custom-built facility, such as larger, more efficient ovens, will help to bring down running costs. The business is also considering a fleet of electric delivery vehicles following the recent trial of its first electric van.

Cavan Bakery supplies 80,000 products every week to its own shops and cafés, as well as wholesale to more than 100 local businesses. Alongside the expansion, it hopes to open three more storefronts this year to add to its existing 13 locations in Surrey and South London and meet growing demand for locally and ethically produced food.

Specialising in sourdoughs, the artisan bakers at Cavan also make pastries, buns and cakes, sausage rolls, and sandwiches.

Director Jeff Greenall said: “We’re really privileged that we’ve been able to grow at a strong and steady rate, particularly over the last decade as people have discovered the craft of skilled artisan bakers who provide quality and diverse goods. We are proud to provide our customers with local, sustainably-sourced products.

“People are at the heart of our success. This includes our fabulous staff and our loyal customers. In return, we want to create the best products possible at an affordable cost. Our new bakery and shops will ensure that, because quality is baked into everything we do – literally.”
