Construction begins on £11m Surrey welfare centre for Army recruits
Work is underway on a new £11 million welfare centre to support recruits at the Army Training Centre (ATC) in Pirbright, Surrey.
ATC Pirbright delivers the Army’s Phase 1 Training, a preparatory 14-week course before troops go on to learn skills specific to their chosen Army trade in the Initial Trade Training.
Due for completion in 2024, the new Alexander Barracks Soldiers Centre will offer a single, central welfare hub for the Pirbright recruits, replacing the current facilities spread out across the site.
Brigadier Richard Brown, Head of Infrastructure Plans for the British Army, said: “The Alexander Barracks Soldiers Centre will make a significant and positive contribution to the experience of recruits embarking on their Army career at ATC Pirbright.

“Infrastructure is about people – not buildings – and this project is one of many examples of the increasing investment across the Army estate that is improving how our soldiers live, work and train.”
The project is being delivered by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and is jointly funded by the British Army and its grant-making charity, the Army Central Fund (ACF). A ground-breaking ceremony on Thursday, 16 March was attended by representatives from the Army, ACF, DIO, contractor Henry Brothers, and technical service provider WSP.
Warren Webster, MPP Programme Director at the DIO, added: “DIO is proud to be involved in the delivery of this impressive welfare facility, which is the start of a substantial site redevelopment that is taking place at Pirbright.
“Not only will it be built using sustainable construction methods that contribute to the Government’s commitment to Net Zero, it will enhance the lives of the recruits who use it.”
