Building contractor Speller Metcalfe has been appointed to build a 90-bed extra care housing scheme in Rowley Regis for Sandwell Council.

The new facility has bee specially designed to allow older people to live longer in their own homes, providing accommodation to those age 55 and over who require care or support.

The development has received planning approval and will be built on council-owned land between Moor Lane and Harvest Road and have benefitted from £3.9million grant funding from Homes England.

The three-storey building will feature 67 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom apartments and ancillary spaces alongside a range of communal facilities including a restaurant and a hairdressing salon.

The development, which has been designed by the council’s in-house design team, will also feature a share garden for residents to enjoy.

Construction company Speller Metcalfe, who work from offices in the midlands, south west and London, has been awarded the contract following a competitive tender through their place on the Homes England Delivery Partner Panel 3 (DPP3) Framework.

"We are delighted to be working with Sandwell Council to deliver this much-needed facility in Rowley Regis" said Speller Metcalfe Regional Director, Rob Lashford.

Sandwell’s cabinet member for homes, Councillor Joanne Hadley, said: "We are pleased to be working with Midlands-based Speller Metcalfe to deliver this vert ambitious project to provide much-needed housing for older people.

“The new apartments will be built on the fields opposite the cemetery and will only take a small portion of the field.

“We hope that these apartments will free up larger family homes as older people choose to move here.”

Sandwell’s cabinet member for living healthy lives, Councillor Farut Shaeen, added: “These new extra-care homes will give older people the opportunity to keep their independence by staying in their own home but still have access to quality care and any personalised support they might need.”

Caroline Cormal, Head of Home Ownership and Supply for Homes England in the Midlands said: “We are committed to working with ambitious partners to build the right kinds of new homes where they are most needed.

“It’s great to see our funding helping Sandwell Council to deliver housing and accessible community facilities for older people in the area.”

Construction will start in August and is scheduled for completion in early 2021.
