A leading multi-disciplinary company has successfully completed a major bulk fuel installation project in the south.

Independent firm McAndrew Martin designed a bespoke system to completely replace ageing diesel storage tanks and pipework at the Ministry of Defence site.

The company’s in-house Mechanical and Electrical Engineering division provided specialist expertise for the six new tanks and systems through Amey.

Its installation will generate greater efficiencies and enhanced capacity for the refuelling of military vehicles directly on site, and packaging of supplies for bases nationwide and for use in the field.

McAndrew Martin, based in Portsmouth with offices in London and Cambridge, has six disciplines: architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, structural engineering, building surveying, general practice, and project management and contract administration.

Horace McAndrew, director of mechanical and electrical engineering, said: “This was a complex project requiring the installation of bulk storage, pipework and management systems for significant volumes of fuel. One of the challenges was to lift the tanks into place in one piece, so we surveyed for ground stability and soil composition to ensure the cranes involved were safely positioned. The successful installation has enhanced the site’s capacity and performance, generated efficiencies and helped reduce its environmental impact.”

McAndrew added: “Our strong track record in MoD work and excellent professional relationship with Amey were key to the success of this project. We have considerable experience and expertise built up over many years in mechanical and electrical engineering, including the installation of fuel storage and related systems. Demand continues to grow nationwide as operators embrace new technology and take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.”

McAndrew and fellow director Barry Lee led the project for 40-strong McAndrew Martin.

The company – which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year – was ranked 87th in Building magazine’s annual Top 150 Consultants list in 2018.

It is based at the Acorn Business Centre in Northarbour Road, Portsmouth, and has offices on the South Bank in London.

The MoD centre is in the south of England, although its exact location is not being identified.
