Hampshire floating house gets go ahead following appeal
A floating house planned for a reservoir near Alresford in Hampshire will become a reality following a successful appeal after the plans were originally rejected by Winchester City Council.
The approval represents the first Paragraph 80 approval in the Winchester area. The legislation, previously named Paragraph 79 and, before that, Paragraph 55, allows houses with a high design quality to be built in the countryside.

The house was designed by Winchester-based AR Design Studio. Director Andy Ramus told the Hampshire Chronicle: “The appeal decision follows a lengthy and challenging planning process, but demonstrates that with a strong design concept and an experienced and tenacious multi‐disciplinary team, applicants can, in the face of a resistant planning authority, secure planning permission for a bespoke piece of residential architecture.”
Dubbed The Water Lily House, detailed designs for the project have now begun, which includes overcoming the engineering challenges posed by a floating house. Construction is expected to begin later in 2023.
