Dorset firm’s ‘super-hangar’ wins design award
A ‘super-hangar’ constructed by Dorset’s John Reid & Sons Ltd has won a national design award.
The hangar, situated at London Biggin Airport, is the UK’s largest dual cantilever hangar. It claimed a major accolade in the 2022 Structural Steel Design Awards.
The hangar achieved an ‘Award’, the highest of three honours available which also include a ‘Commendation’ and a ‘Merit’. Of the 21 finalists, only five achieved the top prize.
The facility was a joint project involving John Reid & Sons – known as REIDSteel – and Kent-based architect and main contractor Civils Contracting Ltd. It will be occupied by aerospace firm Bombardier.
The design, drawing, fabrication and installation of the complete steel frame, electric hangar doors and underslung cranes were all provided by REIDSteel, along with the floor decking, cladding and glazing elements.
The awards ceremony, held at Spitalfields in London, was attended by a REIDsteel delegation selected from all areas of the business.

Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, said: “All at REIDsteel are absolutely thrilled to win this prestigious award.
“The SSDAs are a hallmark of excellence as the foremast awards in our industry and act as a real showcase for the exceptional capabilities of British design, engineering, manufacturing and construction.
“Our success is down to the whole team at REIDsteel and is a testament to the talent and commitment of every single person in the business without whom this award would not have been possible.”
“Our ‘one team’ ethos also extended to Civils Contracting, London Biggin Hill Airport and Bombardier.
“We are proud to have worked to closely together and to see this landmark project win the recognition it so richly deserves.”
Despite having won a host of industry and business accolade, this is the first time the firm has won the particularly coveted SSDA Award.
The super-hangar is REIDsteel’s 11th at the airport and will be used by Bombardier for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft. It includes offices and a VIP lounge.
Its 45m cantilever trusses allow the hangar to have two 160m clear span entrances and two vast floor spaces of 77,500 square feet each, unobstructed by supporting columns.
REIDsteel’s entry included details about the hanger’s design and engineering which created significant reductions in steel use and a reduced carbon footprint compared with alternatives. It was the only company to perform both the structural design and steelwork fabrication for an Award-winning project.
