Ashford’s Discovery Park to be renamed 'The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Park’
Discovery Park in Ashford will be renamed to ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Park’, following official confirmation from the Cabinet Office.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Park will be a new recreation ground for all Ashford residents to use. The 142 hectare site will connect Chilmington Green to Court Lodge and the wider area through improved footpaths and cycleways.
The park will mix designed and landscaped areas, including a large sports facility with indoor and outdoor pitches, for humans with protected habitats for wildlife.
Ashford Borough Council is leading the planning, with developer contributions aiding the building of sports facilities as the development continues.
Cllr Gerry Clarkson, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, said: “It is pleasing to note that this new park will reflect the historic nature of this milestone of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
“I am grateful to officers in our tourism team who were instrumental in providing the historical background information that assisted me to make such a strong case to the Cabinet Office.”

According to Ashford Borough Council, this is the culmination of a lengthy process to satisfy stringent criteria for Jubilee-related naming, with the process beginning back in November 2021.
The Government guidance states that “You do not need to apply for permission to use ‘Platinum Jubilee’ or ‘Jubilee’ for events or projects, or buildings relating to the Platinum Jubilee.”
The sticking point comes from the mention of Her Majesty. While ‘Platinum Jubilee’ was free to use, approval is required for any projects looking to include ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ or ‘The Queen’s’ in their name.
Only those which are of outstanding importance, or those which have a close royal connection, have been granted the use of ‘Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee’. However, “’The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee’ could be approved where there is no pre-eminence or Royal association”.
