As a result of a successful bid for £50,000 from the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP), Reading College has opened its doors to a Solutions Lab providing high-spec new resources in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Solutions Lab is designed to equip young people in the sub region with the science, technology, engineering and maths skills needed to support the tech-focused business base in the area.

Reading College is currently one of two institutions based in Thames Valley Berkshire awarded funds for this purpose - work on a similar lab at Newbury College is under way with a completion date of July 2016.

Peter Read, chairman of Thames Valley Berkshire LEP, commented: “This a great example of where the LEP has supported the development of new facilities in the area to support our students, workforce and business community.”

The Solutions Lab at Reading College is used by an array for student groups from entry level to foundation-degree level in engineering. The Lab’s footfall is some 200 students per week using either the specialist equipment and/or the independent-study zone created through a dual-use of the space. The investment has been used to support electrical and electronic engineering technology and to provide the software to support learning and development.
