Berkshire Pupils Empowered by Energy Experts
Pupils at a Bracknell School participated in an SSE Energy Solutions education project entitled SSE Climate Connect. The event taught pupils how renewable energy infrastructure works, thus promoting career choices in the sector.
Rewise Learning staged the exercises for Kennel Lane pupils, during which they built and operated a model wind turbine and learnt about climate change. The free education workshops will be held at schools across the UK with learning resources available online.
As part of the STEM workshop, pupils built and tested their own wind turbines, including the opportunity to experiment with different turbine blades and experimented on how factors such the direction of a turbine can affect efficiency.

The workshops also featured a mobile recording studio where students wrote and recorded original music.
In addition to the full-day workshops with the Rewise Learning team, the SSE Climate Connect education programme provided free publicly available lesson plans and learning resources for teachers and pupils. The programme and workshops are all complementary to ongoing curriculum work.
Nikki Flanders, Managing Director of Energy Customer Solutions at SSE, said: “I’m proud to bring our brand-new education programme to pupils in Bracknell. We have been working on our schools programme all year and are excited to be partnering with Rewise Learning to bring this practical and interactive workshop to pupils here at Kennel Lane school, and other schools across the country this term.
“We know that the next generation of engineers and leaders could be in the very classrooms we visit, and we want to do our part to empower them to find their passion and consider a future in renewables.”
Nathan John, CEO of Rewise Learning said: “We see first-hand that workshops like this have a profound effect on the confidence of pupils, and how they see their own role in creating a better world. For many pupils, workshops like this with SSE Energy Solutions could give them the boost they need to consider a career in the renewable energy sector.
“We are excited to work with SSE Energy Solutions to take these curriculum friendly workshops across the country and continue to inspire young people about the power of renewables.”
