Residents and visitors to the Royal Borough will be able to walk and relax in a new green space from next spring thanks to a recent land deal.

In preparation the council will clear away old equipment left on the site, undertake ecological studies of the area and draft plans for a series of pathways to guide users through the fields and woodland next to Ockwells Park.

The £725,000 deal struck last month has now been signed ensuring public access to the great outdoors to the south of Thriftwood Farm, Cox Green.

Once work is completed the new land will link in with neighbouring Ockwells Park and include areas for walking, relaxing and for wildlife to thrive.

Councillor Samantha Rayner, cabinet member for culture and communities, said: “Purchasing this land offers us a fantastic opportunity to invest in the future of the Borough.

“Now the deal has been finalised we can plan for the best use of this site to ensure it becomes a valuable asset for everyone.

“We are committed to keeping this as open space and are already looking at a programme of tree planting, creating path ways and introducing benches and signage to guide visitors.”

Volunteers are being sought to join in with a series of tree plantings as the community is encouraged to get involved.

No development will be allowed to take place in the area and ideas for how to best use the land will be pulled together in a 10-year masterplan.
