Hampshire's Welborne garden village development names regional housebuilder partners

Three Hampshire housebuilders have been selected to work on the initial phase of the Welborne garden village development.

Pye Homes, Thakeham and CG Fry & Son were named as partners by lead developers The Buckland Group.

The trio of firms will, between them, build 600 homes for the development with construction beginning early next year.

This 1,000-acre development has been in the planning phase for over 17 years, now the commencement of construction looks to be just on the horizon.

The project has secured £40million in funding from the Housing Infrastructure Fund from Homes England, which will be partly used to upgrade access to the development from the M27.

John Beresford, managing director of Buckland Development Ltd, said: “At Welborne, we have formed partnerships in a new kind of business model where Buckland shares in the risk and reward with our build partners.”

“Our three partners won’t pay for the land until the homes are sold, which means that smaller, quality-driven builders are able to build schemes that would have normally been reserved for large-volume builders.”

In total, around 30 businesses will play a role in the delivery of Welborne, all selected due to a shared commitment in building practice.

Rob Boughton, CEO of Thakeham, said: “At Thakeham, everything we do is focused on the communities we create and the wellbeing of those within them. Welborne is an opportunity to build a generation-spanning, sustainable community, a great place to live.”

“The Buckland Group has committed to an innovative model of build partnerships designed to deliver a context of cohesive architecture using the highest quality building materials, and incorporating variation through considered build detailing.”
