Greenway and Partners, a sustainable building services consultancy which offers a wide range of design, Mechanical & Electrical engineering and project management services, will celebrate its milestone 50th anniversary in June. A party is being organised for staff and clients at the garden house at Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa, one of many landmark buildings the company has proudly designed over the years.

Greenways, which is based in Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, employs 12 staff. Its engineers have a combined total of 150 years’ experience in the industry. The company was founded in 1969 by Mr Des Greenway from premises in Warwick Street where it remained until 2016 when it moved to its current modern air-conditioned offices in Bedford Street.

Greenways has a wide range of clients across the education, health, public, residential, industrial and commercial sectors. It has worked on many historic projects and listed buildings such as National Trust Wimpole Gardens, Hanley Park in Stoke on Trent, National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, Lenton’s Lane Cemetery and War Memorial Park in Coventry as well as a £5 million project for Jephson Gardens which included the construction of a temperate garden house with a restaurant/café, new lighting and the refurbishment of the historic gate house.

Other clients include key landmark buildings such as Warwick Hospital, the Royal Pump Rooms, The Gurdwara Sahib Leamington and Warwick (Sikh Temple), Warwick University, Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell College, Oxford University, London School of Economics, The Academy in Kings Norton, Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council, Twycross Zoo, Penso, Premier Engineering Group as well as numerous Building Developers throughout the UK.

Leaders in renewable energy systems and sustainable engineering solutions, Greenways are increasingly asked by clients to produce feasibility studies on renewable and sustainable energy solutions to reduce their energy costs and their reliance on grid connected supplies. Their engineers have designed and installed ground and air source heat pumps, solar hot water production, solar heating, photovoltaics, sedum ‘green’ roofs, bio-mass boilers, wind turbines and even water wheels to generate clean energy. They also regularly design LED and intelligent lighting systems to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.

Energy Efficient, Carbon Neutral and cost effective electrical and mechanical designs have been installed in many flagship buildings including Warwickshire College, Warwick School, Ashorne Hill Conference Centre, LSE London, The Brit School Croydon, The New P2 and P3 Production Facilities at Penso Coventry, Stratford Artshouse and the major refurbishment of the Civic Hall in Stratford upon Avon.

Stratford Artshouse went on to be named “Best Major Commercial Work” by Stratford District Council’s Building Control Office. So proud are Greenways of their commitment to using renewable energy sources that the company has invested in 2 new fully electric pool car named Zoe 1 and Zoe 2. These cars have helped win several new contracts due to the impression it has made with clients.

Buildings are built in 3D environment called BIM (Building Information Modeling). Greenways have made significant investment in software, hardware and training to enable projects to be completed in a BIM environment. BIM allows Greenways to offer services which allow both reduced waste and increased efficiency with the added benefit of software and technical expertise. Greenways utilises BIM in order to provide clients with predictability, scenario testing, as well as sustainable construction while providing on-site safety, construction management and asset management as a fully integrated system.

Warwickshire College is where Nik Chambers, Operations Director at Greenways undertook his apprenticeship. The building is one of many which Greenways has transformed in a £12M upgrade to achieve a “Very Good BREEAM” rating with the help of natural ventilation and LED lighting with controls. Nik said, “Greenways re-developed the teaching block and in doing so reduced operational costs and helped our client achieve their long-term environment objectives. By combining efficient building services with a more thermally effective building, we cut the electrical load by 30% and the gas load by 50%”.

There are many projects that Greenways is proud to have worked on, one of which was designing green services for a specialist horticulture college in Worcestershire. The Teaching Block & Collections House was a £5.8M development that included the design of a double height greenhouse at the entrance to the building. The result was another “Very Good BREEAM” building which met the needs of both students and plants whilst offering the college reduced operational costs without compromising on energy efficiency goals.

Paul Howell, Director of Electrical Services at Greenways said “We are delighted to be celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. We owe much of our success and longevity to our skilled, dedicated and hardworking team. Our senior staff members are shareholders so have a vested interest in our business and we encourage staff to work their way up within the company. In return they have helped us develop long term relationships with our clients resulting in most of our work coming from repeat business or referrals. We look forward to Greenways expanding in the future and continuing its leading position in sustainable energy solutions”.
