Potential future for Chatham docks revealed in early plan

A first look at a possible future redevelopment of Chatham Docks in Kent has been revealed in an early plan, it was reported.

A planning application has reportedly been submitted for a screening opinion about a redevelopment of the area, which could see existing warehouses demolished, new units built and the construction of pedestrian and cycle paths.

The application is open for consultation until December 7, with a decision aimed to be made by December 12.

The developers have reportedly said the variety in the plan of possible unit sizes could attract a range of businesses - from small independents to large creatives.

The idea of redeveloping the dockyard has attracted controversy over the years.

It caused the collapse of Medway council’s previous Conservative administration’s attempt to create a Local Plan, in part due to divisions within the group about this site.

Opposing the plan is the 'Save Chatham Docks' campaign, which wants to keep the area as a working dockyard.
