The Cathedral Hotel

One of Salisbury’s most iconic buildings, The Cathedral Hotel, has found new owners following its closure last summer.

Savills represented Claverton Estates Limited on the sale to a local investor, for an undisclosed amount.

The Cathedral Hotel is a mid-terraced three story property comprising a public house on the ground floor and first floor and hotel with 22 bedrooms (21 en-suite) on the third and fourth floors.

The property sits within a plot of approximately 0.16 acres (0.064 hectares) with a patio garden area to the rear.

The new owners plan to make a significant investment to bring the Cathedral Hotel up to modern standards including a roof top terrace with spectacular, panoramic views of the Salisbury skyline, subject to planning permission.

As the building is listed Grade 2 there will be comprehensive discussions with the city’s conservation officers to ensure the hotel’s many historic features - including a stunning central staircase - are retained and sensitively restored.

The new owner, who wishes to remain private, first became aware of The Cathedral Hotel as a teenager when it was the home of Salisbury Jazz Club every Friday evening.

When the hotel reopens after refurbishment, the new owner intends to include a jazz band to provide music at the venue.

The Cathedral Hotel occupies a central location at the western end of Milford Street close to Guildhall Square and Market Place.

The surrounding area comprises a typical range of independent and chain retailers located in mainly traditional buildings.

Chris Bickle, director in the licenced leisure team at Savills, said: “We a delighted to secure new owners for The Cathedral Hotel which has been closed since July 2022.

"The new owners have exciting plans to bring this property back into hospitality use for the benefit for the local community.

"The sale reinforces the demand for commercial assets with strong underlying property fundamentals in the South West.”

Nearby, Savills is currently marketing the freehold of the former Dancing Moose/Bill’s with a guide price of £1.25 million.

Woolley & Wallis represented the purchaser.
