Planning permission has been secured for 17 affordable homes in New Milton.

Approval by New Forest District Council was granted despite advice from Planning Officers. They argued the project would be detrimental to the historic setting of a nearby grade-II listed building, and had concerns the design and layout was not good enough.

Citing the length of time the land has remained unused and access to local employment and recreational spaces, plans were approved by nine votes to five.

The developers, Hannah Homes Ltd, will now begin constructing 14 houses and three flats on the vacant plot at Milton Barns on Gore Road. This is a reduction from the original plans submitted by the developer, which had detailed 19 dwellings.

The development, which will consist entirely of housing categorised as affordable, will also include 30 parking spaces.

Councillor David Hawkins said the development ticks: “all the boxes for people who need a place to live.

“The other advantage is there are industrial sites across the way which give employment and behind it there is Fawcett’s Field, with several football pitches and green space. I can’t see why there is an objection to it.”
