Maidenhead's Braywick Park football ground to be redeveloped

Plans for a new football stadium at Braywick Park in Maidenhead are expected to be submitted this winter.

According to a report in the Windsor Observer, following consultations with supporters, stakeholders and the public, the club hopes to put forward the plans by December.

Maidenhead United’s current home in York Road is the oldest active football ground in the world, having been in use since 1871 (the same year nearby Reading FC was established).

Back in April, the club purchased a plot of land in the north of Braywick Park for a reported £460,000. It estimates it would cost around £10 million to maintain its current ground, making a new ground a more realistic option.

Jon Adams, chief executive of Maidenhead United, said: “It is sad that we are leaving York Road. We’ve been there for a very long time but clearly [the move] is the only way for us to achieve our ambitions for the club.

“We are not just a football club. We are more than that. We see ourselves as a community resource that is growing and needs to continue to grow,”

If it goes ahead, the development would be funded by the club’s limited company rather than public money, and would be available for other community uses including an archery club who currently use a nearby building.
