The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and Maidenhead Golf Club have signed a contract which will see the council buy back Maidenhead Golf Club’s lease, opening up the opportunity for the site to be brought forward for development. The council owns the freehold on the site and the Golf Club will now give up its 24-year lease early.

The deal opens up the opportunity for this 130-acre site to be developed to deliver around 1,500 new homes, including 30% affordable housing for local people. New infrastructure, including road improvements, new schools, health facilities and public open spaces would also be part of any future development.

Cllr Simon Dudley, leader of the council and lead member for housing, said: “We need to build a town for everyone and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the needs of residents and provide new housing and infrastructure right in the heart of the town. Our intention is to enter into a joint partnership to develop the site which will ensure the development is sympathetically designed to fit in with the surroundings.
