Teams from Crowe offices across the Midlands helped to raise more than £5,000 for Down Syndrome UK by donning their purple socks for Purple Sock Day to mark International Day of Disabled People 2023.

Created by the United Nations in 1992, the day is celebrated around the world annually on 3 December to promote the rights and well-being of disabled people across society in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Organised by Crowe’s Ability Network (CAN), which raises positive awareness around disability inclusion across the firm, colleagues donated money by buying specially designed Parallel socks or through wearing anything purple as a mark of solidarity to celebrate the day.

The proceeds from donations will directly help Down Syndrome UK, a parent-led national charity, empower 4,000 families challenge outdated stereotypes and prejudices so people with Down syndrome feel valued and included in the communities in which they live.

The donations will also help support the ‘Positive about Down Syndrome’ campaign to provide new and expectant parents contemporary information about the reality of living with Down syndrome and offer meaningful ongoing support.

Johnathan Dudley, Managing Partner of Crowe’s Midlands office and Head of Manufacturing, said: “I’m delighted our team joined with colleagues across the UK to help raise money for Down Syndrome UK to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities Day.

“Donning purple socks is a simple act but the money raised will help the charity provide much needed support for families across the UK. It also reflects our values in making the world more inclusive by celebrating disability inclusion and neurodiversity to provide people with the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

Richard Baker, Crowe, Audit Partner, said: “I am pleased Crowe has chosen to support Purple Sock Day and promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in our society.

“My daughter Florence has Down syndrome and know firsthand the excellent work Down Syndrome UK does to support families. The firm’s donation will help make a real difference.”
