Surrey County Council is planning to hold a skills-building event dubbed the Surrey Skills Summit. It's due to be held on November 10th at the Sandown Park Racecourse.

It's expected to be a milestone event for the county's business people, bringing together education institutions and businesses in an effort to further boost Surrey's local economy.

The summit will provide key local firms with the chance to describe what skills they will need in the coming years. Education providers such as colleges and universities will be on hand to discuss personalising vocational programmes and training in order to create Surrey's future workforce.

The event will also mark the official introduction of the Surrey Skills Plan, which will include recommendations and measures to help deliver the skills, jobs and opportunities needed for Surrey's future economy to prosper.

Notable speakers are set to include:

  • Jennifer Coupland, the Chief Executive of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education
  • Anthony Impey, the CEO of Be the Business and Chair of the Department of Education’s Apprenticeship Ambassador Network
  • Mark Wilson, Head of Talent Acquisition over at McLaren

Matt Furniss is Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Transport, Infrastructure and Growth. He had the following to say about the planned event: “Surrey has the UK’s second largest GDP after London and for decades has been a natural home for companies from across the world."

"As competition for talent becomes tougher and skills shortages become more pronounced, it’s essential for Surrey to become more proactive in planning for the future. The Skills Plan and events like the Skills Summit are essential for growing a sustainable economy for Surrey. We need to come together to provide the right conditions for business to thrive, delivering skills, jobs and opportunity for all.”
