The Solent is hosting a series of events this week to celebrate National Maritime UK Week.

The event, held biennially, looks to illuminate the maritime sector’s developments, recognising the  technology, innovation and teams responsible for 95 per cent of the UK’s global trade. As part of the celebrations Portsmouth International Port will host members of the public in an open day.

The industry, and the opportunities it presents, will be showcased during the week of events (10-16 October) across the region which relies on the maritime industry for almost 200,000 jobs.

Anne-Marie Mountifield, Chair of Maritime UK Solent and Maritime UK Board member said: “The Solent region is the beating heart of the world’s marine and maritime sector.

“During national Maritime UK Week, there are a number of events here in the Solent which will show first-hand the critical role this important industry plays for our region, the national economy, and on the international stage."

One of the main events of the week will be the inaugural Maritime UK Solent Awards. Held at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton on 14 October, the awards will recognise the region’s foremost offerings.

The next day, 15 October, will see an open day for members of the public at Portsmouth International Port.
