Premium business campus leads the way in environmental stewardship
Lakeside North Harbour’s (Lakeside) commitment to creating a vibrant, eco-conscious atmosphere for both its occupier community and the broader environment is evident in the multitude of initiatives undertaken in the past year. Lakeside’s tireless efforts to promote sustainability and efficient resource management are not only beneficial for the environment but also contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community.
Renewable energy
The most noteworthy development at Lakeside recently is the groundbreaking solar project. This initiative is set to be one of the largest of its kind in the UK as the installation of solar panels, which is underway, covers both the buildings and car parks within Lakeside. With the integration of a battery storage facility, this project will generate green power for the campus, thereby significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Wildlife support
In collaboration with The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Lakeside has erected a number of bird boxes, feeding stations, insect hotels, and hedgehog houses. This follows an ecological and wildlife habitat survey conducted on campus which recommended the installation due to the variety of different species identified on site. These purpose-built habitats not only provide sanctuary for various species but also encourage a diverse range of wildlife to thrive within the community. The initiative has not only contributed to the welfare of the local bird population, but has also enhanced the experience for occupiers with a viewing and seating area for birdwatching.
Tree planting
Continuing its sustainability efforts, occupants at Lakeside sponsored planting 25 Pyrus Chanticleer trees, sourced locally from a supplier in Romsey. These ornamental pear trees bloom with bee-friendly blush and white flowers from Spring through Summer, providing pollen for the resident bees in the ten hives cared for by their resident beekeeper on campus. Several businesses also joined the cause, contributing over £1,000 in donations to The Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity. These initiatives showcase a commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity by Lakeside and its occupants.
Sustainable travel
To further their initiative to promote sustainable transportation, Lakeside has introduced a range of convenient choices. Occupiers can now select from a variety of eco-friendly travel options, including a free shuttle bus service to Portsmouth centre, secure bike storage, bike share (Beryl Bikes) and electric scooters (Voi Electric Scooters) alongside 13 EV charging stations onsite.
These alternatives not only reduce the environmental impact but also make transportation to and from Lakeside more accessible and cost-effective. Additionally, Lakeside has plans to launch a car share scheme in the near future, reinforcing its commitment to making environmentally conscious choices as convenient as possible for its occupiers.
Lakeside’s unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability is apparent in the diverse and impactful initiatives it has undertaken in the past year. From pioneering solar projects to providing habitats for wildlife, planting trees, and promoting sustainable transportation options, Lakeside’s efforts extend far beyond its role as a business and community hub. Their ongoing dedication to environmentally friendly initiatives sets a promising example for businesses and communities alike.
