Does your business have a great idea to save water, but not the funds to make it happen? If so, you could be just who Southern Water is looking for.

If you have an idea for a project – whether it’s harvesting rain or shower water, fitting flow restrictors on taps, harnessing new technology to save water, or anything else you can think of – you could partner and save by applying to Southern Water’s Business Partnership Fund.

The application for funding support is open to all eligible businesses and all partly and fully-funded projects will be considered. Southern Water will contribute, match or fully fund those that are selected and meet the criteria.

The water-stressed South East

Water is a precious resource. Every year the population of the South East grows, but the amount of available water remains the same.

When people think about droughts or water shortages, they often think about hotter parts of the world – like Australia, Africa and the United States. But you may be surprised to hear that the South East of England is officially water-stressed. In fact, the region has had three droughts since 2000 – and they’re likely to happen more often in the future.

Due to climate change, we can’t always rely on rainfall to top our water sources up. As a result, there’s less clean water to go around than ever before. In fact, if we keep consuming at our current rate, in time, demand will outstrip supply – as there’s only so much we can take from our environment.

What Southern Water is doing

As well as reducing the amount of water lost through leaks in the network, Southern Water is working with Portsmouth Water to build Havant Thicket Reservoir – the first in the South East in decades – to provide a reliable source of water for customers that is fit for the future.

At the same time, they’re building new pipelines and pumping stations to connect water supply works in Hampshire in order to move water around the network and reduce the amount taken from the environment.

They’re also introducing water recycling in four locations across the region to provide a reliable water supply even in times of drought.

Partner and save

Despite all the improvements being made to ensure a network that’s fit for the future, these changes don’t happen overnight, and saving water is a collective responsibility. That’s just one reason why Southern Water is on the lookout for new and innovative ideas to help reduce water use in businesses across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Sussex and Kent. Can you help save a little water and make a lot of difference?

Applications can be submitted from 25 September 2023 until 31 December 2023. All applications will be reviewed and the successful projects will be awarded funding from January 2024.
