The Swan at Streatley has been put on the market, the hotels team of Colliers International has announced. Offers are invited for the renowned four-star hotel situated on the banks of the River Thames near Reading.

The Swan, which is owned by the Bracknell-based Nike Group of Companies, boasts 45 en-suite letting bedrooms, 30 of which are river facing, and has several function rooms for conferences and weddings, including the Magdalen Oxford College Barge.

Nike, run by chairman John Nike, also owns the Coppid Beech Hotel at Bracknell in a diverse portfolio that includes an ice rink, ski slope, car dealerships and property developers. The rest of the Group is not affected by the sale.

The Swan at Streatley includes Cygnetures Restaurant and River Terrace, right by the Thames. The hotel has a spa and health club, plus 16 permanent moorings which are complemented by casual moorings alongside the hotel bar and restaurant.

Jonathan Wren, director at Colliers International, said: “This Grade II Listed property is thought to date back in parts to the late 17th century. The current South Wing was originally a stable block and dates back to the early 16th century, when it would have been part of a group of farm buildings and cottages. Later it was used as a boathouse, with 19th century red brick refacings being added to the Tudor frame.

“Over the years The Swan has entertained many painters and writers and when Danny La Rue bought the hotel in the 1970s, his presence at the inn drew crowds of admirers who were often thrilled to find 'mine host' serving them in the bar at weekends.”

The village of Streatley is situated in the Goring Gap which provides one of the prettiest natural settings in the region.

Colliers International is inviting offers for this property.
