Southampton: The future’s green for ABP port

ABP Port of Southampton’s Dock Gate 20 warehouse looks set to achieve the highest environmentally-friendly award in recognition of the building’s sustainability and green credentials.

The newly-extended warehouse is on target to achieve the coveted BREEAM “excellent” environmentally-friendly building rating due to its carefully-chosen design and construction processes and practices.

The £3.7 million expansion saw an additional 6,000 sq m extension to the pre-existing 14,000 sq m facility this summer and has set the bar for the port’s ongoing drive to invest in a sustainable future for the site.

The project was fully funded by ABP, constructed by Midas Construction Southern, and is leased by retail logistics company Import Services.

The building’s roof, constructed of over 3,200 solar panels, is forecast to generate some 800,000 units of sustainable electricity (KWh) every year and will generate over 75% more energy than the warehouse consumes. The remaining energy will contribute to the other users on the port’s private electricity network, predominantly the five new cranes at the SCT 5 container terminal.

ABP considered a number of environmental benefits and provisions in its carefully-planned design and construction methods, such as providing amenities for staff who cycle to work, choosing energy-efficient artificial lighting and low water consumption fittings, water leak monitoring and using responsibly sourced, recycled materials.

Port manager Clive Thomas said: “We are very proud of this project because it’s a fantastic example of what we are doing here in the Port of Southampton.

“This is part of a £150m planned investment by ABP Southampton and the warehouse’s impressive green credentials are exactly in line with a long-running programme to minimise our impact on the environment.”

Project engineer Gideon Aymes said: “I am pleased to have delivered a project that not only meets the needs of our tenant, but also does so in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner.

“Achieving the BREEAM excellent rating required the early commitment of ABP, the tenant and the contractor in the design process and careful consideration of the way the building is finally used.

“The end result is testimony to that commitment.”
