Construction work on new Brighton office space The Portland Building begins
The Portland Building, a new £28 million office project on the junction of Church Street and Portland Street in Brighton, has started construction under the direction of the developer MRP. The project hopes to revitalise a location that has been unoccupied for more than two decades.
The plan will provide 30,000 square feet of much-needed, premium, EPC A-rated office space in the city's North Laine area.
The Portland Building, should be one of Brighton's most desirable new offices for environmentally aware enterprises, will have outstanding sustainability and technical elements and be constructed to reach a BREAAM Excellent certification.
When finished, it will include two 'green walls', a 'green roof' and PV panels, all of which promote biodiversity and enhance air quality.
The developer is also conducting a Lifecycle Carbon Assessment with the goal of achieving a benchmark "A" grade, which would mean that the project would be 31% more carbon-efficient than the average new office building.
In order to offer a welcome atmosphere for individuals who commute to work by bicycle, the building will be finished with a bike ramp leading to a secure cycle storage space and changing facilities.
Following the completion of The Brinell Building and Cityview, The Portland Building expands MRP's investment footprint in the city. It has recently delivered close to 100,000 square feet of new, contemporary office space to Brighton.
Emma Ormiston, who works for SHW - the letting agents for The Portland Building - said this about the project: “Brighton has seen a lack of Grade A office developments with most schemes being let prior to completion of the build and over the last 18 months demand has continued to increase as we are seeing a flight to quality by occupiers."
"We expect The Portland Building to be especially well received due to its central location and ESG credentials, presenting a real opportunity for occupiers to relocate to a first-class office building where they can thrive and grow.”
Mark Diamond, the Senior Director at MRP added this about his firm's work on The Portland Building: “MRP has a proven track record in delivering best-in-class, environmentally sustainable workspaces in cities across the UK and The Portland Building will deliver high-quality office space in Brighton."
“We are excited to bring forward this best-in-class office development and we are confident that when complete it will be a hub for sustainable and innovative businesses helping to support Brighton economy."
“MRP are long-standing investors in the city, having completed three major projects here in recent years, and we look forward to working in partnership with the business community and the city of Brighton as we work towards completion in Q4 of 2023.”
