Cheltenham solicitor “Lycra’s up” for epic charity cycling challenge in Hannibal’s footsteps
The Senior Partner at Cheltenham-based law firm BPE Solicitors, is limbering up for his latest epic charity challenge which will take him, like Hannibal over 2,000 years ago, across the French Alps. But he’s leaving the elephants behind, and doing it on two wheels.
Over five days from June 19, BPE’s John Workman, who will be 60 this year, along with long-term cycling buddy and former colleague Tim Williams, 40, will take on an epic five Tour de France climbs in the French Alps – including the iconic Mont Ventoux – (the third highest point on the ride) and four others – including Alpe de‘Huez – topping out at a mere 9000 feet.
The adventurers will cover a total distance of 392 miles (or the distance from London to Edinburgh) and climb 8848 meters (or two and half times the height of Everest).
The men are undertaking this phenomenal challenge for the Footprints Foundation, an organisation founded and still led by the former Chairman of Mears Group, Bob Holt OBE.
The Footprints Foundation supports the Khaya Centre and its network of orphanages near Johannesburg, providing shelter, day care, education, clothing, food and medical help to young children from townships and squatter camps – many of whom lost their parents to AIDS or have been abandoned by their families. The Centre and its network are providing the only daily meal many of these children get…
This isn’t the first time BPE has supported the Footprints Foundation. in October 2011 a Group of BPE colleagues travelled to South Africa to help refurbish the Zenzeleni Orphanage. And John has visited twice since then, leaving his legal expertise behind to become an unskilled labourer, painter, even a brick-catcher. He will return to Johannesburg again this October to work with of the project teams.
The more money John and Tim can raise, the more the Khaya Centre benefits.
Companies or individuals willing to sponsor the intrepid duo can sponsor a shirt for between one and five days at £100 per day
Or for £500 join them for a day.
