University of Surrey announce solar power partnership with SSE Energy Solutions

A new solar project by University of Surrey in partnership with SSE Energy Solutions will see renewable energy generate 20% of power used on campus. The generated electricity equates to enough energy to run 4000 homes for a year.

The new solar facility will be built on University lands in the west of Guildford.

The solar facility will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1,110 tonnes per year and is crucial in meeting the University’s 2030 net zero carbon target. Surrey has cut emissions by 24% since 2005.

The University’s partnership with SSE Energy Solutions project will also enhance biodiversity. Professor Bob Nichol, the University of Surrey’s Executive Lead for Climate Change, said of the campus drive to net zero: “The University of Surrey community is dedicated to doing our bit to minimise global warming and our move to home-generated solar power is an important part of our plans. Increasing our solar generation is just one part of Surrey’s sustainability story and our road to ‘Net Zero’.”
