A scientist from Southampton, Samantha Lane, has been internationally recognised for her work into drug safety research.

Samantha is a Senior Research Fellow at the Drug Safety Research Unit, she received the Best General Podium Research Presentation award at the ISPOR Europe 2023 conference.

The award celebrates Samantha’s recent research into the types of evidence used in decisions about withdrawals of medical products due to safety concerns.

The DSRU’s studies have shown a growing reliance on epidemiological and observational research, which is where investigators monitor patient experiences in the real-world settings instead of under artificial conditions of a clinical trial.

Samantha said: “Evidence from observational studies is key to understanding the effectiveness and safety of medicines and vaccines in the real world, which may come as surprise as clinical trials are seen as the gold standard of drug development, and they certainly have their place. But from a safety point of view, observational studies can be more representative of the population the drug will serve.

“I am very proud to receive this award for my presentation and I would like to acknowledge my DSRU colleagues who conducted the early research that my work was based on.”
