IPSE, the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, has responded to The Digital Economy, the report newly-released by the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, by calling for action.

Simon McVicker, IPSE director of policy and external affairs, commented: “IPSE welcomes the report's detailed analysis and supports the recognition of the digital economy as a key driver of the wider UK economy.

“According to IPSE research, 10% of the UK’s 1.91 million population of freelancers work in the information and communication industries. However the influence of the digital economy on many more industries outside of this cannot currently be measured.

“It is vital Government takes action on the recommendations laid out in this report and provides more detailed measurements and data on the digital economy, as well as a clear plan on regulation and enablement in a post-Brexit landscape.

“There is inconsistency in internet access across the UK, and a lack of internet infrastructure available in rural areas. A clear plan is required in order to improve on internet access, broadband speeds and 4G. The UK needs world-class digital infrastructure to compete on the global stage and this is even more important post-Brexit. We must lead in digital development.”
