Poole: Success for North Sea Systems' acoustics survey

North Sea Systems, based in Poole Dorset, has collaborated with Kongsberg Maritime to undertake a project monitoring subsea acoustics at a key Isle of Wight tidal renewables energy site.

The companies conducted a passive acoustic monitoring programme at the Isle of Wight Nursery site. Located just off Yarmouth, the site is regarded as one of the prime locations in the south for potential tidal turbine development programmes.

The project saw a successful deployment of a mid-water hydrophone using North Sea Systems' DataFish, and Kongsberg’s Acoustic Monitoring Buoy System (AMBS). The hydrophone measured baseline acoustics within the location, and also nearby shipping movements. The DataFish provided an ideal platform, not only powering the instruments, but also transmitting the data in close to real time, ready for processing. Such acoustic monitoring techniques can also be used to establish marine mammal movements.

Ben Baker, commercial manager of North Sea Systems, commented: “We were delighted to join forces with Kongsberg on this important project, which allowed us to demonstrate the flexibility of the DataFish survey device. We are committed to supporting the renewable energy sector and look forward to undertaking many similar projects in the future”.
