Fareham: Barnbrook devises cool system to monitor train performance
Innovative ‘smart’ technology developed by a Fareham firm is being used to boost the performance of trains via mobile devices. Award-winning Barnbrook Systems is using its cutting-edge BlueCube remote condition monitoring sensors to gauge coolant temperatures in engines in real time.
The live data is tracked on an ‘iSenseMobile’ app developed in-house, which can be viewed via tablet, laptop or desktop. The app can show exactly how any train’s engine is performing based on the entry and exit temperatures of coolant into its system.
Satellite maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) mean the exact location of each train can be pinpointed on its journey – showing the role of hills and weather on its performance and punctuality. The system is integrated with local weather data and National Rail Enquiry data.
Barnbrook chief technology officer Andrew Barnett, who is the brainchild behind BlueCube, said: “This technology is now revolutionising railways.
“It places the power to diagnose performance and punctuality problems directly in the hands of the engineer or even the driver through the iSenseMobile app.
“It is a 21st century solution to an ag- old problem which allows us to pinpoint exactly where, when and why issues occur as they happen. It means train operators can more quickly and readily engineer solutions, and ultimately deliver the best possible service for the paying passenger.”
BlueCube sensors are already being used to analyse the performance of train doors and carriage temperatures on railways as well as for engine performance and coolant temperatures.
Barnbrook is a designer, developer and manufacturer of electronic and electro-mechanical switching devices for aerospace, defence, maritime, rail and commercial industries worldwide.
Its BlueCube sensors and accompanying iSense software – all designed and manufactured inhouse – can track nearly any function on an asset in real-time to make sure it keeps running efficiently.
The innovative system can be used across any sector, including marine, automotive and security and forms a key component in the Internet Of Things.
Thirty-five strong Barnbrook won the Aerospace and Defence title at the Made in the South East Awards at the Hilton Hotel, Gatwick Airport in late 2016.
The family-run firm was also a finalist in the SME Manufacturing Company of the Year (below £25m turnover) and Technology Award categories.
