ePropelled moves to Warwick Uni Science Park

Electric motor startup ePropelled has moved to the University of Warwick Science Park’s Venture Centre, with plans to bring 30 jobs to Coventry in the next few years.

The move is part of a longer term plan to move to Herald Court, which is also part of the Science Park, to facilitate the firm’s expansion.

ePropelled is developing a system called eDTS which applies high torque – the force that gets a vehicle moving – without drawing high current from the batteries.

The system effectively acts like a higher gear for an electric vehicle (EV), allowing it to be far more energy efficient at higher speeds such as when cruising at 70mph on motorways.

It also generates more speed when the engine is only producing low torque, further increasing efficiency.

Matt Taylor, managing director of ePropelled UK, said: “One of the biggest roadblocks to widespread adoption of electric vehicles is how cost-effective they are compared to traditional vehicles.

“On a single charge, the range and efficiency of a typical EV is not as high as it could be considering the price of electricity and the distribution of charging points around the country.

“Our eDTS system will change all that. It will give EVs a much higher range from a single charge and will allow for efficient performance at the national speed limit. Currently, driving at 70mph in EVs draws enormous energy from their batteries.

“Moving to the University of Warwick Science Park to further develop the eDTS system made perfect sense. We are right in the middle of the electric vehicle market here, and it will be the ideal base to refine our technology and demonstrate it to OEMs and Tier 1 manufacturers in the area.

“We are grateful to the team for the space at the Venture Centre before our move into Herald Court. It’s allowed us to get a head-start in the Midlands before we look to massively grow our team once the move is completed.”

Jane Talbot, Centre Manager at the Venture Centre, said: “ePropelled is working on some truly incredible tech in the electric vehicle sector, and we are so pleased to have welcomed the team to the Science Park.

“We made it easy for Matt and the team by providing holding space at the Venture Centre for the team to base themselves before their upcoming move to Herald Court.

“We are really excited about what the future holds for ePropelled and the highly skilled jobs it will bring to Coventry.”
