The Scott Brownrigg-designed Larkhill Medical and Dental Centre officially opened its doors in Wiltshire on November 30, 2022.

The £13 million facility, which was built under the Army Basing Programme, is the first in Wiltshire to offer shared primary healthcare services for both the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the National Health Service (NHS).

The centre has been designed to achieve DREAM Excellent standards, with all medical areas located on the ground floor and Army dental facilities on the first floor. The building also includes a shared waiting area and reception.

Due to the centre’s location within the Stonehenge footprint, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the design of the centre had to take into consideration the surrounding area and the requirements of the Planning Authority and English Heritage.

The exterior of the building was designed to be low-lying and contemporary, with horizontal lines and an inclined canopy to reduce the visual mass of the structure.

Minister for Defence Personnel, Veterans and Service Families Dr Andrew Murrison said: “It is truly state-of-the-art. Delivered under the successful Army Basing Programme, it rightly provides the very best primary care facilities and is a model for Defence-NHS cooperation.”

The Army Basing Programme was established to fulfil the UK government's 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) commitment to relocate all military units from Germany by 2020 and restructure military units in accordance with the Army 2020 Plan. The initiative aims to generate annual savings of £240 million.

Scott Browrigg Director, Erika Gemmell, said: “Scott Brownrigg are delighted to be have led the design of this excellent new facility. Developed with extensive stakeholder engagement and working collaboratively to support the overall delivery of the Army Basing Programme ’’

Fiona Slevin-Brown, Director of Place – Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board said: “Since its completion in 2020, this bespoke facility has been used during the COVID-19 pandemic as a mass vaccination centre by both DPHC and the NHS. Now, we look forward to providing comprehensive health care to those in the Armed Forces, their families and the wider local community.”
