National law firm Gateley plc has appointed John Downs as a new real estate partner at its office in Reading.

Downs spent most of his career in London at Fieldfisher LLP before joining Shoosmiths LLP in Southampton.

He has been involved in a wide range of commercial property work, with a particular focus on the hotels and leisure sector, real estate finance and property investment.

He advises international and UK corporate clients on the acquisition and disposal of commercial property assets and has acted for a number of institutional landlords and corporate tenants on estate management matters, including the roll-out of branded concepts. In addition, Downs works closely with colleagues on the property elements of corporate transactions.

He said: “Joining Gateley plc is a very exciting opportunity for me, as it is not only a dynamic, full-service national firm, but through the alternative business structure the firm can offer a wide range of services to its clients. The new Reading office is 25 minutes from London and provides a fantastic platform for advising both national and international clients.”

Christopher Avery, head of Gateley’s Reading office, added: “Expanding our offering is something we are always looking to do and John is another example of the high calibre of personnel we are attracting to Reading. This move is indicative of Gateley plc’s future plans for its Thames Valley office.

“Discussions are currently ongoing with other partners as we continue to pursue a full-service offering.”
