Plans to renovate the heating, lighting and windows at Newport’s County Hall on the Isle of Wight will cost £1.3 million.
The upgrades feed into the council’s wider plans to meet net zero by 2030. The first phase of the plans, financed by £2.5 million from the public sector decarbonisation fund, is currently ongoing at 10 locations on the island.
The second phase will see air source heat pumps and LED lighting installed along with an upgraded heating system and better windows at County Hall.
Members of the previous Tory administration raised objections to the building renovations. Despite these protestations, the current administration has no plans to demolish the building and argued that, as long as it exists, the council needs to make it as green and functional as possible, while also ensuring those working in the building are adequately heated.
