Southampton Council have granted planning permission to demolish a city centre unit last used by Debenhams.

The property will be replaced by a housing complex comprising in excess of 600 apartments. Council stipulated it must receive a suitable security plan prior to demolition.

Planning Committee approval had been secured last month, this week the project secured final permission from the head of Southampton Council's planning department.

Upon completion the development will feature one of the tallest buildings in Southampton, standing at 17 floors.

The complex will comprise three blocks in total, 598 one, two and three bedroom units, nine townhouses and a 108-space car park in addition to public realm spaces.

Developer National Regional Property Group claim the project will bring meaningful change to the city centre, housing as it will approx' 1000 people in a key city centre location.

The application stated: "The proposed development will create a high-quality mixed-use development which will make a significant contribution to the housing needs of the city as well as promoting enhanced vitality and viability in a part of the city centre which is in need of regenerating."
