Charles Russell Speechlys has appointed Philip Withey as partner in its banking and finance group.

Philip joins the firm’s Cheltenham office from Womble Bond Dickinson, where he specialised as a partner in banking and finance for more than 17 years.

During that time, he’s built up extensive experience advising both lenders and borrowers on a range of acquisition, asset, structured, development and project finance transactions.

Philip also works with key clients on issues relating to derivatives trading, regulatory matters, secondary debt trading, restructuring and sub-participation.

He has a strong track record dealing with complex financing transactions in the energy and financial institutions sectors and has focused on expanding his international work in the energy sector, while still retaining a connection to the South West market.

Daniel Sullivan, partner and head of banking and finance, said: “Philip’s appointment further strengthens our banking and finance practice and the services we are able to offer our clients.

“He’s an experienced practitioner with a developed practice and brings across a range of skills, experience and contacts that will sit well within the group.

“We wish him a warm welcome.”

Philip’s appointment follows recent growth in Charles Russell Speechly’s banking and finance practice, and in 2024, the firm has welcomed six partner or consultant-level hires to its transactional teams.

He added:“The firm so far seems like a great cultural fit, and I’m excited to meet and collaborate with my new colleagues to identify areas of overlap that will benefit all of our clients.

“I expect to use my experience in real estate finance, corporate finance transactions, client development and transaction management to contribute to the sustainable growth of the practice.”
