Wealth management and professional services group Evelyn Partners is hosting a flagship event in Bristol for businesses looking to expand to the US.

The Doing Business in the US event, at Evelyn Partners’ office in Portwall Place on September 14, is being co-hosted with CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA), one of the largest accountancy firms in the United States.

A panel of experts from the UK and US will explain the many opportunities and potential pitfalls that UK businesses should consider when doing business in North America.

Panellists will include Claire Burden, who leads Evelyn Partners’ national advisory consulting team in Bristol, and CLA tax principal Thomas Lind, who specialises in providing tax services to technology companies expanding to the US.

Other speakers include US expansion specialists Chris Winter from the global banking and financial services organisation HSBC, and Masami Izumida Tyson from transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson.

Key topics for discussion include:

  • Setting up a business in the US - practical considerations (immigration, structure, legal, tax and banking) and choosing the right location
  • Growing a business in the US - maximising US opportunities and managing risk
  • Seeking funding in the US
  • Preparing for a successful exit

Helen Bassett, the partner at Evelyn Partners in Bristol who heads up the firm’s business outsourcing services team, said: “This event will be invaluable for fast-growing businesses looking to set up in the US for the first time, or those with existing US operations who are planning to grow there.

“As well as having a panel of experts on hand to answer questions and support firms with their US expansion plans, there will also be an opportunity to network and build valuable connections with other businesses that already operate across the pond.

“We see this launch as just the beginning of an exciting series of US expansion events that will run regularly in Bristol, creating a community for businesses on the same global growth trajectory.”

Evelyn Partners and CLA are founding members of CLA Global which is an international network of independent accounting and advisory firms, providing support to business expanding overseas or moving into the UK. CLA Global recently launched a global mobility programme involving advisers from Evelyn Partners in the UK and CLA in the US.

Helen added: “Our current ‘job swap’ between Dominic Gibbs from Evelyn Partners in Bristol and Pål Proeitz from CLA Minneapolis has only highlighted further the global opportunities for our clients. It’s great that we can get this flagship Bristol event underway and share the strength of our knowledge of cross-border advice with the business community.”
