Smart air quality systems for airline cabins which have a sense of smell are being unveiled by a Buckinghamshire firm at a major trade show.

FliteTrak, headquartered in Amersham, and with an innovations hub at Daedalus Park in Hampshire, is launching its SpriteAero intelligent remote monitoring technology at the Hamburg Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) on April 10 to 12.

The firm’s cutting-edge system – the first working technology of its kind – makes air travel safer, more comfortable and more efficient for carriers and passengers.

SpriteAero monitors air inside passenger cabins for harmful or dangerous elements as well as tobacco, smoke and alcohol.

SpriteAero can also monitor temperature and humidity. Units transmit their data wirelessly from individual rows of seats to attendants’ tablets or onboard systems in real time during flights.

SpriteAero can also immediately send alerts if danger levels are reached.

Data can also be logged for later analysis and help improve maintenance turnaround times as well as enhance the flying experience for passengers.

Andrew Barnett, FliteTrak joint managing director, said: “We are looking forward to showcasing SpriteAero at Hamburg. It is the first working technology of its kind with the power to make flights safer and more comfortable for passengers while improving efficiency and security for operators and carriers.”

SpriteAero can be configured to work with FliteTrak’s ViatorAero system or independently.

ViatorAero monitors individual seats for such variables as movement, temperature, seat belt closure and mobile phone activation.

Systems can be incorporated into newbuild aircraft components or retrofitted into existing cabins.

FliteTrak has just marked its first anniversary.

In 2017, the company was a finalist at the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation Awards. It was also on the shortlist for the Crystal Cabin Awards at AIX.
