Port of Southampton hosts annual Cruise Lines International Association trade event

Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton, Europe’s top cruise turnaround port, will be hosting the annual CLIA UK & Ireland conference at its Horizon Cruise Terminal.

Over the weekend, the Port is set to welcome hundreds of travel agents to what is considered Europe's largest travel agent conference.

The weekend event spans two days and offers exclusive tours aboard Cunard's latest ship, the Queen Anne, along with five other impressive cruise vessels. Attendees can attend an industry trade fair, specialised conference sessions tailored for agents new to selling cruises, and a celebratory evening.

The event is a great opportunity for ABP to exhibit the Port's capabilities and demonstrate its support for the cruise industry. Over the past few years, the sector has shown remarkable growth, playing a vital role in creating and maintaining thousands of local jobs and contributing an estimated £1 billion to the Southampton and surrounding area economy.

Thea George, Senior Cruise Manager said: "I am delighted that our team can support and host the CLIA conference. It is a great opportunity for travel agents to visit the Port and see the terminals, car parking and infrastructure that support the sector. These agents will sell the cruises, so understanding what the Port and city offers will help them drive the market and promote cruising from Southampton."

Andy Harmer, CLIA UK & Ireland Managing Director said: "It is very fitting that the conference is held in the Port, providing travel agents with the unique opportunity to board ships and gain first-hand insight into the passenger experience. The networking opportunities throughout the event are also invaluable, offering a platform for agents to connect with industry professionals. It is good to partner with ABP to offer this event in Southampton and we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of partners from across the trade later this week.”

The cruise sector is a significant contributor to the local economy - £1bn of value to the Southampton and surrounding economy is from cruise calls, supporting more than 15,000 jobs and generating a wide range of business opportunities in Southampton and the wider area. From those closely aligned to the sector, in hospitality, stevedore operations and marine services to the wider Hampshire visitor economy and other local Southampton businesses.
