This year's annual Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge has been won by a team of University of Southampton students, who competed against almost 1,000 other teams from across the globe.

The winning Southampton team was made up of postgraduate research students Xiaohan Yu, Junyu Kang, Shuyue Li and Libo Chen. Over the course of five trading weeks in October and November, they generated an astounding relative profit of $305,644.

A total of 60 student teams from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton competed against opponents from all over the world and excelled.

A postgraduate team from the Business School also finished in seventh, while a combined team of undergraduates from Economics and Computer Science ranked in the top ten globally and in the top five for Europe.

Professor Nikos Tzavidis is the Head of School of Economic, Social, Political Sciences. He said this about the win: “We are excited by the interest of students from the different schools from across the faculty in the trading challenge. This win is a testament to the power of the interdisciplinary collaborations and the benefit of investing in the resources available to our students and staff through the Financial Laboratory.”

Head of Southampton Business School Professor Laura Costanzo added: “We are very proud of this achievement which is a testament to the team-work and talent of our students and academics in the Business School in the subject of Banking and Finance and our commitment to leverage knowledge into real practice to enhance students’ experiential learning.”
