Southampton to host UK Space Agency's 'Space for Everyone' tour dates

The UK Space Agency will be bringing its 'Space for Everyone' tour to Southampton this summer, a showcase of the UK's space industry.

'Space for Everyone' will be in the city from June 1 to June 5. Part of the showcase will include the docking of the UK Space Agency's 72 ft model rocket at West Bar Gate.

This tour, which is aimed at people of all ages, will be officially opened by deputy CEO of the UK Space Agency, Ian Annett, and ESA reserve astronaut, Meganne Christian.

Meganne said: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Space for Everyone tour and really looking forward to coming to Southampton to meet some of our next generation of space professionals. Space is such an exciting sector to work in, where the possibilities are truly endless.

“I have worked with people of many different backgrounds and expertise in my journey to becoming a member of the European Space Agency astronaut reserve, so I know how important it is to make sure that young people everywhere have access to the learning and inspiration they need to consider a future in space.”

A large part of the tour's objective is to inspire young people to pursue a career in the space industry. Activities include a UK launch experience through virtual reality, learning about the role of satellites, and a display of the varying career paths within the UK space industry. All admissions to the tour are free.

Deputy CEO of the UK Space Industry Ian Annett said: “The space sector requires various skills – many not traditionally associated with it – and champions inclusivity and the need for innovation.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist, or even an astronaut, as there are a host of talents needed to bring space closer to our daily lives and improve our understanding of this critical part of the environment for the benefit of the planet and its people.”
