Lumley Insurance sponsors Cirencester theatre outreach programme

Cirencester's innovative new Barn Theatre has launched an outreach programme with a vision to open up performing arts tuition to all. In April students from as far afield as North Wales gathered for a free taster workshop in the new studio theatre at the Barn. This was an opportunity for them to learn from professionals, including the cast of The Secret Garden, the Barn’s first production. Everyone was treated to a unique mash-up of performances and songs from this highly-acclaimed musical.

The event was made possible by local insurance broker, Lumley Insurance Ltd which is celebrating 25 years in business this year. Speaking on behalf of the company, Russell Jones-Walker stressed that: "Team work and confident communication and presentation skills are essentials in life, but especially in business."

Those seeking success in theatre were advised to follow their passion, work hard, remain true to themselves, and never stop learning. They then had a taste of what’s to come from Barn Outreach with a full workshop to grow their skills in performing, singing, dancing and acting.

Theatre Director Iwan Lewis outlined the Barn’s ambitious plans, explaining that within a few years, there will be a youth academy taking education right through to professional stage school: ‘Education is at the heart of this theatre. Many people can’t afford theatre. It’s our dream to make the Barn the very first theatrical experience for many, whatever their age or background. We’re already seeing hundreds of young people through our doors for the summer project and extra-curricular tuition, but this is just the start. We’re looking forward to developing local talent and attracting the best talent to Cirencester.’

Lumley Insurance is sponsoring the first workshops which are set to travel to schools around Cirencester from this autumn. Local heads of drama and PHSE are invited to register their interest for a Barn Outreach workshop at their school by calling Tessa Webb on 01285 648242.
