Healthcare professionals were on hand inside the unit to give people advice on diet, exercise and healthy living which will help them take better care of their livers. Attendees were offered a liver health screener, consisting of a series of lifestyle questions focusing on alcohol, obesity and viral hepatitis to assess liver damage potential.
Attendees were also offered the chance to have their liver assessed using a FibroScan machine, a quick, simple and non-invasive scanning method which checks the stiffness of the liver for possible damage, with soft and elastic livers being healthier.
With one in five people at risk of liver disease and diagnosis numbers increasing quickly, campaigns such as this one are hoping to right this trend. liver disease can lead to cancer – incidence rates of which have more than doubled in the past 20 years. Despite 90 per cent of liver disease being preventable, it is still the largest cause of death for 35 to 49 year-olds.
Philip Campbell, Commercial Director at MEPC Milton Park, said: “Thanks to Ipsen’s sponsorship of the event, it was a privilege to welcome the British Liver Trust to Milton Park to promote awareness of this really important health issue, giving people the opportunity to get tested and find out more information.
“As an international science and technology community, we’re always keen to support initiatives that our Milton Park-based companies are passionate about, including the huge advances they make in life sciences and technology which lie at the very heart of what they do.”
