Waste management firm Grundon’s ever-expanding fleet of electric waste collection vehicles is in the running for a top industry award.

The firm, which launched a £300,000 electric collection vehicle on to the streets of Bristol in July, has been shortlisted for Private Sector Commercial Fleet of the Year Award in the annual GreenFleet Awards.

The winners will be announced on December 7 at The British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Grundon chooses Bristol as its flagship launch for electric recycling fleet

The awards, sponsored by Optimize, celebrate the work being done by fleet operators and manufacturers as they strive to deliver net zero operations.

Grundon is the only waste company to have made the shortlist and sees it line up alongside organisations such as The Royal Mail, Welch’s Transport, and Evri.

John Stephens, Grundon’s general manager – logistics, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this industry award and feel especially proud that we are the only representative from the waste sector.

“We are working hard to deliver a greener, cleaner collection fleet and by the end of the year will have six EVs in place, with more to follow during 2024.”

This summer, Grundon unveiled its first two re-powered EVs operating in Bristol and Colnbrook in Berkshire. Since then, further vehicles have been added to the fleet.

The company set up a new depot in St Philips just two years ago and plans to convert more of its city fleet to eco-friendly fuel over the coming months.

The programme will see another 15 vehicles, including waste lorries and skip vehicles, run on a mixture of electric, hydrogen and technologies which are a hybrid of the two.

The launch in Bristol follows on from the implementation of the Clean Air Zone (CAZ), which came into force in November last year.

The CAZ was set up in the city centre in a bid to further improve air quality, cut carbon emissions and move towards zero emission travel.
